Belgrade - Getting Serbian Border Police patrols more mobile, faster and more efficient is the aim of the donation of 40 “Nissan Pathfinder” vehicles which the European Agency for Reconstruction handed over today to the Serbian Border Police Directorate.
The €1.1 million delivery of robust, 4x4 white all terrain vehicles is part of a large donation to the Border Police Directorate delivered over several years by the Agency.
Thanking the EU and the Agency, Assistant Minister of Interior Mr. Dejan Matic, stated that this donation would boost the quality of the Border Police patrols’ work. Modernisation of its fleet would also help to address the challenge of reaching remote areas of Serbian borders. “In few moments, after this ceremony, vehicles will be sent to final locations – to our border police patrols in secluded areas of the country”, Matic added.

Ceremonial donation of vehicles’ keys was done by Head of the Agency’s Belgrade office Mr. Daniel Giuglaris and Head of Political Section of the EC Delegation in Belgrade Mrs. Esmeralda Hernandez Aragones.
“Our assistance ranged from building and reconstruction of four border crossing points, to upgrading of veterinary and phyto-sanitary border inspectorates and provision of technical assistance and implementation of Schengen procedures at the border-crossings in Serbia” – said Mr. Giuglaris.
“From the European Union point of view, efficient border management and border security is of great importance for the region as it plays a crucial role in Serbia’s efforts towards European integration explained Esmeralda Hernandez Aragones.
The total EU assistance to the Serbian Border Police Directorate amounts to €14 million. The European Agency for Reconstruction assisted the creation of the National Action Plan for Integrated Border Management. It provided specialised equipment for surveillance of green and blue borders (remote areas and rivers and lakes) as well as training on Schengen standards at border-crossings points to the Serbian Police.
In the past seven years, the EAR has managed a total of €41.3 million for the upgrade and modernization of Serbian borders. This figure includes reconstruction of the following border-crossings points: Horgos (with Hungary”), Batrovci (with Croatia), Presevo (with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) and Dimitrovgrad (with Bulgaria), equipment, upgrade of veterinary and phyto-sanitary Border Post Inspectorates.
